Reelogger Series
Model 2001
The Reelogger® is a water level and/or multiparameter datalogging system that introduces many new concepts ideal for field use by hydrogeologists, hydrologists and anyone wishing to monitor water automatically. Inexpensive coaxial cable can by used for dedicated units, as the system only requires 2-conductor cable and uses a barometric sensor at surface. Portable reel units may be fitted with Solinst flat tape, permanently marked each 1/100 ft or millimeter. The logger may be housed within a protective well cap, in an adjacent housing, or within a portable reel. A manual water level dip meter may also be incorporated into the system, making it easy to determine the accurate depth of static water. Reeloggers have a very small but powerful datalogger which operates on a standard 9V battery, and can store up to 100,000 readings in non-volatile memory. An LCD display with three control buttons allows on-site viewing of data and simple programming without any additional equipment. Infra-red communication allows downloading and programming with a lap-top computer without use of cables. For use with computers that do not have a built-in infra-red port, an infra-red adaptor cable is available. The Reelogger software is very comprehensive and simple to operate on Windows 3.1, Windows95, Windows98 or WindowsNT. Extensive graphing capabilities are built into the software. The software also provides automatic compensation for barometric pressure variations. Features
Interchangeable Probes The modular system can operate up to 8 separate sensors, allowing the user a choice of which to purchase or use. At time of printing, pressure/level, conductivity and pH sensors are available, with more to follow shortly. All are temperature compensated and the temperature readings from the first probe in line are also recorded. The pressure/level measurements are compensated for barometric pressure using a barometric sensor in the logger unit itself. This eliminates the need for vented cable. The narrow diameter sensors are all smart sensors. They have a chip inside the probe with the calibration constants and software to activate and read the sensor for uploading to the logger. There are threaded connectors at each end to permit in-line connection, ideal for use in narrow diameter wells. For use in open bodies of water the probes can be attached to a ring connector. Sensors are rugged, highly accurate and reliable over extended periods of time. When only a single sensor is used, the available memory for data storage is greater than when multiple sensors are used. Sensors
Simple Water Level Sensor A simple water level sensor may also be located within the sensor string. It is permanetly attached to the cable, as the first sensor in line. If this sensor and the flat-tape cable options have been chosen, the initial water level reading for calibration purposes is greatly simplified. When the Reelogger is used in a narrow diameter borehole, this water level sensor allows the use to determine when the water displaced by the sensors has returned to its natural level. Initial calibration readings may also be taken manually. Water Pressure Probe The Solinst pressure sensor uses vibrating wire technology, as it very accurate, rugged and stable. The water level data is presented directly, either in feet to 1/100 ft, or in metric to 0.25 cm. To compensate the water pressure measurements for atmospheric pressure, a temperature corrected pressure sensor is located in the hub of the Reelogger or logger housing, at the surface. This configuration avoids the usual requirement for vented cables, which are expensive, prone to damage, and may in some instances give erroneous results due to lag times in pressure equalization. It makes the Reelogger much easier to transport and use. Conductivity Probe The Solinst conductivity cell is a new highly accurate, very stable cell which uses advanced electronics to give linear output over a very large range. It auto-adjusts to 10 ranges. Temperature Sensors The temperature reading displayed by the logger is the temperature output from the first probe in line. Each sensor has its own temperature measuring device fitted within it for calibration purposes. For applications that require critically high accuracy of temperature measurements, which will be stable over long periods of time, a probe with a platinum resistance temperature device (RTD cell) will be available shortly. pH Probe The pH sensor utilizes a patented reference cell which is field rechargeable and separate from the pH sensor. The reference cell has been proven to be stable over 3 months in laboratory tests. The pressure rating on this unit is limited to 30 ft (100m) below water. Connectors and End Plug Probes can be fitted in any order, except that the optional Water Level Sensor is permanently attached to the cable, as first in the string, and the pH probe has to be the last probe in the string. All other probe ends have threaded connectors to join one probe to the next, and an end plug is provided for the last probe in the string when the is not the pH probe. Software Solinst has gone to great lengths to simplify the input screens for programming of the loggers. The software is very easy to use in either Windows 3.1, Windows95, Windows98 or WindowsNT4. All channels can be viewed simultaneously, numerically or graphically. Both linear or logarithmic programming are available with up to 10 individually defined recording sessions sampling from between every 1/2 second and every hour. Multiple sessions can be pre-programmed with an immediate start or a calendar-based futur start time. Files saved within the logger are compressed form to save memory and are expanded as they are exported. It is possible to select specific data only, through automatic scaling of the screen and variable time compression options. Files can be split up to 10 times to fit 8,000 row spreadsheets. The Logger The logger is small, powerful, and operates for extended periods of time on easily available 9V batteries. The logger can log from 1 to 8 sensors, plus the built-in barometric sensor, and powers all of its probes through the battery. It stores up to 100,000 readings in 512 KB of non-volatile flash memory. The logger has an LCD screen and three push buttons. These allow data readout and simple programming in the field without any additional readout equipment. Data logger Specifications
Cable/Tape The Reelogger system is digital, therefore two-conductor cable is standard. This allows the accurately marked Solinst flat-tape cable to be used, enabling the user to accurately determine the depth of the probe(s) in the well for calibration and accuracy checks in the field. This makes it ideal for portable reel mounted units to be used on shorter term monitoring applications. The flat-tape cable is permanently marked each 1/100 ft. or each millimeter. Stranded stainless steel conductors resist corrosion, provide strength and are non-stretch for accuracy. Dedicated installations up to 1000 ft (300m) may use low cost coaxial
cable with stranded stainless steel conductors. Lengths up to 3000 ft
(900m) can be accommodated by the logger power supply, using a low
resistance coaxial cable. Each coaxial cable has one marking, at the
requested length, and optional marking each 5 ft. or one meter are
available. Batteries Only one standard 9 volt alkaline battery is required to power all the probes and the Reelogger. The battery power available is displayed on the LCD screen. A convienient battery drawer in the reel version has a second battery in sequence, so that the batteries can be changed on at time without loss of logging power. The expected battery life is approximately 100,000 probe long readings. i.e. If one probe is logged every 5 minutes, the batteries would last for one year. When 2 probes are being logged, the memory does not reduce by half, as the date and temperature are only recorded once for any number of probes. If batteries do run down, the logger will stop recording, but the readings will not be lost. A separate 15 year battery is used for the internal clock. |
